STRETCH GLASS SOCIETY BREAKS WITH TRADITION
At this year’s Stretch Glass Society annual convention, show and sale organizers are daring to be different – non-members are being invited to bid at the club’s whimsey auctions, buy raffle tickets and attend seminars, workshops and even the post-banquet presentation by SGS guest speaker, Kelsey Murphy. This is certainly a break with SGS tradition. For the first time since its founding in 1974, the Society is opening up activities that were once the sole privilege of membership. There is just one small hitch. If any non-member is fortunate to win one or more auction items, a small premium will be added to the final price paid to the Society. They will be asked to add a $14 membership fee to the total amount which will provide them with the additional benefit of participating in the silent auction and buying raffle tickets. This premium is a one-time charge. If a non-member is the successful bidder on multiple pieces, they will only pay the fee once. All non-member participants will be required to be present at the close of bidding for immediate payment. Checks are to be made payable to The Stretch Glass Society.
The gathering, which is the SGS’s 33rd annual event, will be held from August 1-3 at the Marietta, Ohio Comfort Inn. The Comfort Inn is located just east of I-77 at exit 1. The days of this year’s event have been shifted to allow for more coordinated scheduling with the Fenton Art Glass Company’s continued celebration activities in honor of the company’s 100th anniversary of glass production at the Williamstown West Virginia factory. The National Fenton Glass Society and Fenton Art Glass Collectors Association are also in the area over the first two weeks of August for their annual meetings.
